The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly known simply as Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is widely seen as the most prestigious competition in the sport. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877 and is played on outdoor grass courts. Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the other three being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. Since the Australian Open shifted to hardcourt in 1988, Wimbledon is now the only major tennis tournament still played on grass. Although Wimbledon traditionally used to start in late June and early July, in recent years it has taken place wholly in July due to changes in the tennis calendar. So put on your finest summer clothes, pick up a bowl of Wimbledon’s famous strawberries and cream and get ready to watch the world’s biggest tennis stars.
