The Leadmill is Sheffield’s longest-running live music venue and nightclub and arguably its very best. Despite its name the Leadmill started life as a flour mill before re-opening in 1980 as a community centre. The Leadmill has since hosted some of the world’s biggest bands, winning multiple local and national awards.
From the very start of its life as a music venue, the Leadmill has won plaudits. In 1982 the NME described the Leadmill as ‘combining the thrift and intimacy of a working men’s club with the leisure processor a Hacienda’, adding that it had the potential ‘to become an important landmark in pop culture.’ That is exactly what it has become as the Leadmill has since been a rite of passage of many bands early in their careers including Arcade Fire, Franz Ferdinand and Sheffield’s very own Arctic Monkeys, who sold out the venue in 2004 before they’d even released their debut album.
