Since opening in 1979, the Old Red Lion has become known as one of the most ambitious and diverse theatres Off West End. With emerging talent as its focus, many talented stage stars have kickstarted their career at the Old Red Lion. Joe Penhall, Kathy Burke and Nina Raine are just a few of the artists who presented their early work at the theatre. Not only that, but the list is always growing.
The Old Red Lion's reputation for challenging theatre has led many of its plays to transfer to the West End or Off-Broadway. Perhaps the most famous play to premiere here is Mischief Theatre's Olivier Award-winning play The Play That Went Wrong. The play soon transferred to Trafalgar Studios before finding its home at the West End's Duchess Theatre. Other famous recent productions include the world premiere of Arthur Miller's rediscovered play No Villain and Kissing Sid James.
The Old Red Lion's main programme generally runs from Tuesday to Saturday evenings. It also hosts matinee performances on weekends. You can even catch artists trying out their works in progress at regular scratch nights on Sundays and Mondays. In addition to its own programme, the Old Red Lion also hosts external festivals. The theatre is currently home to the London Horror Festival, the UK's largest live horror performance festival.
