About

The Museum of Comedy is one of London’s more distinctive comedy venues. Found in the crypt of St. George’s Church in Bloomsbury, the venue combines an exhibition room with the Comedy Crypt, an intimate 80 seat performance space which regularly hosts comedy, theatre and silent film.

The Museum of Comedy was founded in 2014 by the Leicester Square Theatre director Martin Witts and hosts over six thousand artefacts from his decades-long career in the comedy industry. Just a few of the pieces of memorabilia it holds include Spitting Image puppet heads, Tommy Cooper’s magic props and Bill Bailey’s 6-neck guitar. It also hosts the Comedy Academy, a school for comedy writing, performance and production.

Given how the Museum of Comedy drips with comedy history past and present, it’s no surprise that the venue is extremely popular with big comedy names. The Comedy Crypt regularly attracts high profile acts such as Ruby Wax, Josh Widdicombe and Yuriko Kutani to perform on its tiny stage, usually to practice their new material at ‘Work in Progess’ nights.

If you’re looking to hear some of your favourite comedians’ new jokes before they tell them anywhere else, the Museum of Comedy is the place to go.
