An emblem of British culture and entertainment, the Royal Albert Hall is a majestic venue in London’s South Kensington district. Each year, hundreds of world-class events and performances are held, ranging from opera and musical concerts, to sport and award ceremonies, charity balls and film screenings.
The Hall was opened by Queen Victoria in 1871, named accordingly as a tribute to her late husband, Prince Albert. Throughout its history, the venue has been in continuous use, where its versatility has attracted a plethora of guests, including renowned scientist, Albert Einstein, Shakespearean actor, Laurence Olivier, rock legend, Jimi Hendrix and swing king, Frank Sinatra. The BBC Prom has also been held there every summer since 1941.
In more recent years, contemporary big acts such as Ed Sheeran, Russell Howard and Olly Murs have stepped on stage, while Tony Bennett and Paul McCartney returned once again to perform there.
The Royal Albert Hall is visually stunning to visitors, with its striking Victorian design. Wrapped around the circular building, a 5,200 square feet mosaic frieze proclaims its dedication to the advancement of sciences and the arts. The magnificent glass and wrought-iron dome resting upon the Hall was designed in Manchester and brought to London by horse, showcasing the efforts that went into its development! Impressively, it also housed the largest pipe organ in the world when it first opened, further adding to the venue’s stature.
