The Darlington Hippodrome has been Darlington’s main theatre since 1907. Serving up a variety of theatre, opera, music and dance from local and touring productions, this Grade II listed building prides itself on being an arts hub for Darlington and wider County Durham.
The New Hippodrome opened in September 1907 with a classic music hall line-up, charming audiences with its distinctive exterior and beautiful Edwardian auditorium. Over the years it has gone through several iterations, including changing its name to the Darlington Civic Centre. In 2016 the Darlington Civic Centre won a £4.5m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to undergo a full restoration, re-opening in September 2017 under its new name the Darlington Hippodrome.
Now able to seat 1000 people, the Darlington Hippodrome is a more comfortable place to visit than it has ever been, and its upgrades have enabled it to accommodate larger touring performances. Just a few of the recent performances at the venue include singer Jane McDonald, comedians such as Chris Ramsey and the musical Rock of Ages.
