The Bunker opened in October 2016 under the direction of Joshua McTaggart and Joel Fisher. Since then, it has presented several in-house and external productions. During its first year the Bunker presented the award-winning show Skin A Cat, the world premiere of 31 Hours, and shows like My White Best Friends.
The Bunker gained a new artistic director Chris Sonnex in September 2018. Since then, the theatre has upped its initiatives for those underrepresented in theatre. These include an all-female season. Alongside full shows, the theatre continues to hold occasional new writing festivals and play readings. It also serves as home to several resident companies.
Alongside its main programme of shows running for three - five weeks, the Bunker also presents B-Sides. These shorter runs from visiting companies include experimental works and potential cult classics.
Due to its unusual location in an underground car park, the Bunker has a ramped entrance. Its 110-capacity auditorium is marked out by four concrete pillars. The thrust style of the Bunker's stage means that it extends into the crowd on three sides, allowing audiences to have an intimate view of the action.
In addition to its auditorium, the Bunker has several places to just chill out. These include a Writer's Snug, which offers writers desks to work on their latest play, particularly those from underrepresentred backgrounds. The Bunker also has its own busy craft beer bar where crowds can relax before a show.
