About

One of Wales’ leading venues for diverse dramatics, New Theatre offers the Cardiff community a year round programme of West End musicals, pantomimes, children’s shows and more. It further branches out to integrate other stage acts, such as stand up comedy and dance performances.

The theatre celebrates over a century of work in the performing arts. Many theatre legends appear in the venue’s archives, such as Laurel and Hardy, Anna Pavlova, Bette Davis and Shirley Bassey.

More recently, the likes of Ian McKellen, Stefanie Powers, John Barrowman and showbiz star Bruce Forsyth have all worked its stage. The venue has seen a string of fantastic West End productions, including ‘The Full Monty’, ‘Cinderella’, ‘The Songbook of Judy Garland’ starring the ‘Wizard of Oz’ actress’ daughter, Lorna Luft, ‘The Mousetrap’ and ‘Peter Pan’, starring ‘Baywatch’s' David Hasselhoff as 'Captain Hook'.

Its prolific history of providing world-class theatre is complemented by the theatre’s traditional architecture. Built in 1906, the building was designed by architects Runtz and Ford in typical Edwardian Baroque fashion. Upon opening, the site was lavishly carpeted and tastefully embellished in cream and gold. The walls were ornate and elegant while the seats were upholstered in plush red velvet, living up to the dramatic and stereotypical image of traditional theatres.

Despite many refurbishments, the New Theatre retains its old charms and characteristics, seducing contemporary theatre-goers to this day.
