As the Academy Music Group's smallest venue in London, the O2 Academy Islington has become famed for its small and intimate setting. Since it opened in 2003, the 800-capacity purpose-built music venue has become one of London’s most renowned rock and metal venues, hosting established artists, emerging acts and club nights. The O2 Academy Islington started life as the purpose-built music and dining venue Marquee N1 before it was taken over by the Academy Music Group in 2003. In September 2003 US punk rockers Alkaline Trio were the first band to play the new Academy, and the venue has since been a tour stop for many famous acts including Muse, The Cure, Eminem, Paramore and KISS. The venue has been the site of several notable concerts with Funeral For A Friend filming and recording their live album Hours there in 2014. The Islington Academy's sister venue, the Academy 2, has an even smaller capacity of 250 people.
