About

In an effort to become one of the North’s major touring venues, the Palace Theatre underwent significant refurbishment before the turn of the millenium. With a revised programme, the Palace grew to offer a range of events, from larger theatre productions to music and dance performances. Built in 1910, the Palace was originally a charming, silent-movie cinema. It transformed into a theatre in 1949, gaining refreshed looks and remodelling over the years. The latest refurbishment in the 90s saw features enlarged, including the orchestra pit, wings and proscenium arch, while other installments were made, hoping to attract larger crowds. Today, the theatre retains its graceful appeal, with two tiers, traditional red seating and a decorative ceiling. Mansfield are proud of their heritage, and a special centenary book was published to celebrate 100 years of the Palace in 2010. As a variety house, it saw performances from Steve Lawrence and Hilda Baker, alongside other famous names throughout the years. Variety continues today, where its current programme includes seasonal folk concerts, ballet performances, appearances from ‘Strictly’ stars, children’s pantos, sing-a-long film screenings and regular performances by contemporary artists.
