The Lyric Hammersmith is West London's largest theatre. Since opening in 1895, this beautiful and ornate Victorian theatre has become one of the capital's leading producing theatres. The theatre hosts up to 1,000 performances a year. Find the best tickets to Lyric Hammersmith shows via TickX. The Lyric first opened in 1895 after it was designed by the prolific theatre architect Frank Matcham. Facing closure in the 1960s, the theatre was dismantled and reconstructed piece by piece at a nearby site. The Lyric reopened in its current location on King Street in 1979 and remains open to this day. The Lyric is now more of an entertainment complex. Alongside its two auditoria for theatre productions, it boasts a cinema, a cafe as well as partner organisations. These include a recording studio, rehearsal spaces, and a dance studio. The Lyric's stages host both large and small scale productions. Its 550-seater main auditorium holds up to 550 and presents the big scale shows, while its 120-seater Studio hosts productions by emerging companies. The Lyric's range of facilities supports its eclectic programme, which doesn't just aim to entertain. Instead, the Lyric's shows also try to be provocative and challenging. Over the years, the Lyric has hosted numerous controversial plays which aimed to push boundaries, including Seventeen, Shopping and F***ing, Herons and Pleasure. In addition to its main programme, the venue houses West London’s largest youth theatre, the Lyric Young Company. This in-house company aims to develop and nurture young people's acting skills. The Lyric's programme also caters to little ones with its ‘Lyric Children’ strand. Previous pantomimes and musicals hosted by the Lyric include Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox and Jack and the Beanstalk. Essentially, there's nowhere better to get your theatre fix in West London than at the Lyric Hammersmith.
