There are few more universally loved stories in British popular culture than The Snowman. The live stage adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ renowned children’s book has taken over London’s Peacock Theatre every Christmas since 1997, where it is presented by Sadler’s Wells. The touching festive tale of The Snowman continues to warm hearts at a chilly time of year.
The Snowman follows the story of young James and his snowman, who magically comes to life. Briggs’ picture book was first published in 1978 and reached wider attention when it was adapted into an animated TV special for Channel 4 in 1982. The special, which is famously wordless except for Howard Blake’s haunting song ‘Walking in The Air’, was nominated for a Best Animated Short Film Oscar and won a BAFTA TV Award.
The Snowman was first made into a stage show in 1986, receiving its first production at Contact Theatre, Manchester. Using the music and lyrics of Howard Blake, the production features a full script although the story remains wordless, being told through images and movement.
Over the years, the stage production of The Snowman has had several revisions. The most extensive of these took place in 2000, when the play’s second act was substantially changed with the addition of two new characters, The Ice Princess and Jack Frost. However, the tender core of the story remains exactly the same.
With special effects including James and the Snowman flying over the stage and even snow falling throughout the auditorium, The Snowman is a dazzling winter spectacle as well as an emotional tearjerker – just the family entertainment you need at Christmas time.
