See The King And I at the Mayflower Theatre
Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children.
The King And I is one of the greatest musicals made in the 20th Century. The musical, written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, is based on Margaret Landon's novel Anna and the King of Siam.
The stage musical The King and I first premiered in 1951 and was turned into a film in 1956. The legendary film starred Deborah Kerr as Anna and Yul Brynner as The King. The musical has won numerous Tony and Academy Awards in its various forms.
With a superior score of treasured songs including; Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You, and Shall We Dance, and featuring a company of over 50 world-class performers, The King and I is a testament to the lavish heritage of gloriously romantic musical theatre.
Its current UK tour sees West End superstar Annalene Beechey (Les Mis, The Phantom of the Opera) and Broadway's Jose Llana take on the mantle of the King and Anna, visiting Birmingham, Edinburgh, Hull and more around the UK. They come following Kelli O'Hara and Ken Watanabe starring for the West End edition, was filmed at the London Palladium and screened around the country.
