Known simply as SOAD or System, System of a Down are comprised of Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian and John Dalmayan. They formed in 1994 and gained popularity for their self-titled release in 1998 and subsequent albums 'Toxicity', 'Steal This Album!', 'Mesmerize' and 'Hypnotize' through their strong lyrics criticising the War on Drugs, bureacracy, war, globalisation and more. In particular, System have been committed to raising recognition about the Armenian Genocide through their music and politics.
In 2006, the group announced that they were going on an indefinite hiatus that saw the members take on different projects: Malakian formed the band Scars on Broadway with Dolmayan, Tankian pursued a solo career, and Odadjian a side-project with Wu-Tang Clan's RZA. In 2010, the band officially reunited and have continued to tour and play shows around the world, with rumours hitting in late 2016 of a possible new album.
