Motown: The Musical is a jukebox musical based on the life of Berry Gordy and his autobiography To Be Loved: The Music, The Magic, the Memories of Motown.
Follow the history of Gordy as he creates a musical empire, how this featherweight boxer turned his sights onto the music industry and begun his own record label in 1957, eventually going on to discover some of the greatest acts of our time: Diana Ross, the Supremes, the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder and even Marvin Gaye.
It begins in 1983, at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, as stars are gathering to celebrate Motown Records’ 25th anniversary, and Berry looks back to reminisce on his long and successful career, transporting us back to 1957 as a younger Berry starts this amazing journey into the world of music, trying to unite a socially charged and racially divided country. Watch the ups and downs of the personal relationships, professional struggles, and the music that changed the world.
Directed by Charles Randolph-Wright (Born For This, Love/Life) and choreographed by Patricia Wilcox & Warren Adams, Motown: The Musical perfectly recreates the magic of these stars' popular numbers ‘I Hear a Symphony’ by Diana Ross, ‘Happy Birthday’ by Stevie Wonder, the cult classic ABC by the Jackson 5, with 66 songs brought to life by an 18 piece orchestra all for your enjoyment.
