Manchester Storm

Biography

Manchester Storm are a professional ice hockey team based in Altrincham, Greater Manchester. Formed in 2015, they compete in the Elite Ice Hockey League - the UK’s highest level of ice hockey. They train and play matches out of Planet Ice, Altrincham. Manchester Storm were originally established in 1995, and were owned by the operators of Manchester (Nynex) Arena, which had only just opened. The team was a founding member of the Ice Hockey Superleague in 1996 and won the league championship in 1996-97, followed by the Autumn Cup the following season. An honourable mention comes in the form of attendance, when Storm also broke the British record on 23rd February 1997, against Sheffield Steelers, drawing a crowd of 17,245.

Fast-forward to 2014-15, the Hull Stingrays unfortunately had to withdraw from the EIHL. With space available for a top-flight hockey team at Altrincham, that meant a new team was needed at the rink. In June 2015, it was announced that a certain franchise would be making a comeback; leading to the rebirth of Manchester Storm. In their first three seasons back in the EIHL the Storm have proved to be tenacious competitors in the league, building a team in just six weeks during the Summer of 2015. The first season was a challenge, from building an audience and the organisation, to seeing the team giving everything they had.

However, that was just the beginning. Since then, the rinks attendance has soared, having numerous sell-out games.

The Storm have reached the playoffs twice, including a second place finish in the league in 2017-18. Last season 2017/18 also saw them victorious in the Patton Conference, winning some silverware. Whilst raising the profile of hockey in the UK, they have attracted former NHL players, such as Jay Rosehill and Dane Byers. The 2018/2019 season sees 11 returnees to the roster, including last seasons top EIHL point scorer and GB gold medal winner, Mike Hammond and the league's leading goal scorer, Luke Moffat.
