See Mamma Mia! at the Hull New Theatre

The mother of all jukebox musicals, Mamma Mia is the ultimate feel good theatre experience. It combines a Greek island setting with a fun-loving ABBA soundtrack, guaranteeing nothing but a great night out. Since opening in the West End in 1999, the musical has become a global sensation. Today, over 60 million Super Troupers and Dancing Queens have watched Mamma Mia, selling over $2 billion tickets worldwide.

The story was developed by Catherine Johnson with contribution from Benny Andersson and Ulvaeus of ABBA. It was ‘The Winner Takes It All’ that inspired Johnson to transform ABBA’s greatest hits into a theatrical show. She worked over 20 of their best-selling singles into the plot, including the title track Mamma Mia! The soundtrack also includes chart toppers like ‘Take a Chance on Me’, ‘Money, Money, Money’ and ‘One of Us’.

Completing the creative dream team, Phyllida Lloyd directs the show and Judy Craymer produces. Mamma Mia also features a fantastic cast, worthy of bringing the legendary songs of ABBA back to the stage.

The musical centres around bride-to-be Sophie, who lives with her mum Donna on a sunny Greek island. She dreams of having her unknown father walk her down the aisle, so secretly invites three of Donna’s former lovers to the wedding. The only problem is – Donna can’t remember who it is…In the build up to Sophie’s big day, drama unfolds, secrets are revealed and new relationships blossom.

Mamma Mia! is bursting with unforgettable music and hilarious characters. It’s an uplifting tale of friendship, love and past love, set against an idyllic backdrop. The musical’s infectious energy will have you out of your seat, dancing to the irresistible sounds of the seventies. Be part of one of the most successful musicals of all time with tickets to see the lovable Mamma Mia.

About

Hull New Theatre is one of the UK’s leading regional touring theatres. Based in a Grade II listed building rejuvenated after a £16million refurbishment, the theatre based in Kingston-upon-Hull regularly features musicals, opera, ballet, drama and comedy, not forgetting a traditional Christmas pantomime. Hull New Theatre has been operating in some form since 1939 when it was opened as a replacement venue for the Hull Repertory Theatre Company. It survived bombing during World War II and was bought by the Whitehall Company in 1951. The arrival of television affected audience numbers, but a public backlash against a takeover bid by a bingo company in the 60s led to Hull City Council taking over the venue, a role it still fulfills to this day. Hull New Theatre closed temporarily in 2015 for a major overhaul, ready for Hull’s stint as UK City of Culture in 2017. Now well-placed for the 21st Century, the theatre is capable of staging ambitious performances across the artistic spectrum, with recent visitors to Hull including Jason Manford, the stage version of Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em featuring Joe Pasquale, and Jools Holland’s band.
