Bonfire night is one of the most thrilling events that place across Manchester’s parks. From Heaton Park in the north to Platt Fields slightly south, there’s plenty of spectacular firework displays lighting up the city’s sky. The Christmas Light Switch On brings another kind of light display, as the city centre and its surrounding local towns host parties to mark the advent of the holiday. Plus, the award-winning famous Manchester Christmas markets usually open at the beginning of November. Another important date for November is Remembrance Day on the 11th, as parades and services take place throughout Greater Manchester.
This month is also a great time to head to the theatre. Many West End are on tour. They head into one of Manchester’s fantastic venues before the festive pantomime season takes over. Similarly, November is also a big month in music, where you can catch top artists perform at the city’s arenas, bars and clubs.
There’s no need to wait around for Christmas, with so many great events taking place in Manchester in November. Let’s get the party started early!
Bonfire Night events in Manchester
Who doesn’t love bonfire night? Cosy fires, impressive fireworks, and lots of treats (toffee apples anyone?). It’s a celebration unique to the UK, and Manchester always puts on a show. Heaton Park is the most popular, and as some argue – the most epic. But there’s also many other great events for Bonfires Night across Greater Manchester. You can discover more with our handy Bonfire Night in Manchester inspiration guide.
Manchester Christmas Markets
One of the most exciting things about November is the famous Manchester Christmas Markets. They have won awards for being the best Christmas market in the UK, and among the top in Europe. They’re also the ‘most instagrammed’ Christmas market in Europe! The Bavarian cuisine, alpine-inspired chalets and random selection of goods to buy make them popular with locals and tourists alike. They usually open at the start of November and last until the weekend before Christmas.
Remembrance Day events
Also known as Armistice Day, the 11th November commemorates those who gave service in and since the First World War. There is a two minute silence held at 11am, and various other events dedicated to their legacy. Those wandering around Manchester’s city centre in the morning can watch the procession, while many other Remembrance Day events take place across the city.
Christmas Light Switch Ons
A fun family event to get you in the mood for Christmas. The annual Christmas Lights Switch-On in Albert Square brings music, fireworks and entertainment. Many of Manchester’s local towns also host similar festivities, often drawing in some well known singers to perform. Most of the events are free, but might require a bit of planning if they usually get busy.
Theatres in November in Manchester
Theatre is a great option for escaping the blustery, cold weather. If you love the theatre, but not so much the pantomimes (they certainly are an acquired taste), this is a good month to catch a show before the panto season begins. At the Lowry, Palace and Opera House, there’s usually big West End shows touring. Or try HOME, Playhouse Theatre, or Hope Mill for independent or locally-produced shows.
Gigs & Concerts in November in Manchester
November is usually a popular month for gigs and concerts in Manchester. You can normally find a mix between big international stars on tour and upcoming artists playing more intimate-style gigs. Manchester has plenty of places to host live music, famed for its musical offsprings. So why not warm up rocking out to a great gig this November?
