See Hello, Dolly! at the Adelphi Theatre
The latest revival of Hello, Dolly! that saw Bette Midler scoop four Tony Awards stars the incredible Imelda Staunton. The actress is famed for her work on the West End and the big screen - particularly as part of the Harry Potter franchise as Dolores Umbridge (2007-2010). Joining the BAFTA-winning and Academy Award-nominee, is Jenna Russell (Les Miserables, Sunday in the Park with George) and director Dominic Cooke.
The story of Hello, Dolly! first came into fruition in the early 19th century, however under a different name and story. Over a century later, Thornton Wilder adapted the play and broadened the role of Dolly. ‘The Matchmaker’, as it was previously known, was released as a film in 1958, witnessing Shirley Booth in her last role.
After further development, the story took on the new name of Hello, Dolly! In 1964 and became the new Broadway musical by Herman and Stewart, winning a record-breaking 10 Tony Awards. It wasn’t long before the musical was once again a feature film, starring Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau and Louis Armstrong. Garnering three Academy Awards and a killer title track by Armstrong that made it to the Grammy Hall of Fame, Hello, Dolly! Returned to Broadway in 2017 and in 2020 - the West End.
The incredible tale follows Dolly Gallagher Levi, a matchmaker who travels north of New York to Yonkers. She is searching for a match for the handsome, ‘half-a-millionaire’ Horace Vandergelder, which turns out to be rather difficult. But she soon finds a prospective wife for Vandergelder….herself! It’s the all-American comedy and romance bundled together - complete with a fantastic soundtrack.
