About

No English football club is more famous than Manchester United F.C. Nicknamed United, the Red Devils or the Reds, Manchester United has so far won more trophies than any other club in English football, winning its last Premier League in 2012-13. The club is based at Old Trafford in Trafford, Greater Manchester. Manchester United began life as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878 after being formed by workers at the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in north-east Manchester. The club joined the Football League in 1892 and changed name to Manchester United in 1902. United won its first league title in 1902 and has won a record 19 more in the intervening years since. United’s most famous historical managers are Matt Busby, who managed the club from 1945 to 1969, and Alex Ferguson, who took charge from 1986 to 2013. During Busby and Ferguson’s reigns United became renowned for their commitment to attacking football and their rivalries with Liverpool and Arsenal. United enjoyed unprecedented dominance early in the Premier League’s history, with the pinnacle being its famous Treble success of 1998-99. Having won 13 Premier Leagues, 6 FA Cups, 5 League Cups and two European Cups under Ferguson’s reign, Manchester United has been forced to adjust since Ferguson’s retirement. However, the Reds remain the undisputed giant of English football and Old Trafford a vital ground for any football fan.
