About

Burnley F.C. is an English footballing institution. One of the 12 founding members of the Football League and two-time champions of England, Burnley represents the Lancashire town of the same name in the Premier League. The club, nicknamed the Clarets, plays at Turf Moor. Burnley F.C. was founded on 18 May 1882 and was one of the 12 clubs to found the Football League in 1888. The club has played in claret and blue since 1910-11 when it changed colours in honour of English football’s then-dominant club, Aston Villa. Burnley enjoyed two golden eras in its history prior to the creation of the Premier League – the Clarets won the FA Cup in 1914 and were crowned champions of England in 1920-21 and 1959-60. The latter team was famous for consisting mostly of homegrown talent, with the team reaching the European Cup quarter-finals the following year. Burnley faced serious decline in the 1980s, falling to the third tier in 1980 and the fourth tier in 1985, barely escaping relegation to non-league in 1987. However, the club recovered in the 1990s as it was re-promoted to the second tier by 2000. Since restoring its status Burnley have been promoted to the Premier League three times and finally looks to have re-established itself at English football’s top table, with the Clarets even competing in Europe in the 2018/19 season. Anyone looking for quality football in Lancashire can look no further than the team in claret and blue.
