Manchester may claim the plaudits but Birmingham is the real second city of England. The city more than justifies that accolade during Freshers’ Week, as you’ll find no shortage of gigs, club nights and unique events to welcome you to your new home for the next few years.
Birmingham may be most famous for its metal scene, but have no fear: Freshers’ Week will be full of gigs of all genres, from the virtuosic acoustic guitarist Luca Stricagnoli at the Hare and Hounds to the experimental rock band Wooden Ships at the O2 Institute 2. If you like cheesy 90s pop, classic boy band 5ive will be playing at Mecca Bingo in Acocks Green on 29th September.
If clubbing is more your scene, the Hare and Hounds will be hosting legendary house producer DJ Fast Eddie and local DJs Lee Fisher and Jock Lee on 29th September. Meanwhile, Digbeth warehouse venue Lab11 can always be relied on to bring the tunes.
Finally, Freshers is all about fancy dress so if your flat’s full of Peaky Blinders fans why not put on your flapper dress or flat cap and check out the Peaky Blinders festival taking place at the Rainbow Pub on 29th and 30th September?
