Chris Evans may not be done yet as Captain America

Is Captain America hanging up his shield or not?

As we get ever closer to the as-yet-untitled Avenger’s 4 film, there has been a lot of speculation as to the future of our beloved heroes.

Many believe that the original Avengers – Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, Thor and Black Widow – are unlikely to survive the outcome of the final showdown against Thanos in order to make way for a new age of heroes in Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man, The Wasp and Scarlet Witch.

A lot of these theories stem from the published comics that have a variety of parallel timelines, with one in particular seeing Captain America passing away and the Winter Soldier Bucky Barnes assuming his position.

Already in Infinity War we have said goodbye to some huge stars who have teased that we haven’t seen the last of them yet (*cough* Loki *cough*), but Chris Evans may have just let something slip that there is still more to come for his Captain America.

After saying ‘farewell’ to Captain America having finished filming for the next instalment, co-director Joe Russo shared in an interview with AP Entertainment that he may not be done yet. “I think it was more emotional for him than us, only because he’s not done yet,” said Russo quite cryptically. “I don’t want to explain what that means, but the audience will soon understand what I’m talking about.”

He went on to explain that he and his brother Anthony like to keep the audience on their toes in the Marvel movies by never giving up too much away, just like they did in Infinity War with Thanos’ snap cliffhanger.

I think people were surprised. I think some people were upset,” Joe said. “But again, I think it’s our job as storytellers to surprise them and to make difficult choices in the storytelling.

These stories are reflective of how my brother and I feel about life and the way that we see things.

This surprise nugget of information comes after Evans denied that his tweets meant he was saying goodbye to the franchise, stating that he would have made the same sentiment regardless of the end of Avengers 4.

I should clarify that I know I did tweet something that made a lot of people think that it was in some way a spoiler,” he said at ACE Comic Con in Chicago.

I should clarify that regardless of how Avengers 4 ends, I would have tweeted the exact same thing. That last day of filming was a very emotional day and it was the culmination of almost 10 years of filming and 22 movies, this unbelievable tapestry.”

You feel a lot more emotions than I think even I thought I’d feel. And I felt it was appropriate to share the gratitude. I know it had a ripple effect but I am neither confirming nor denying anything.

Will Captain America continue to be a part of the Marvel Universe after Avenger’s 4? Either as a hero or as a mortal once again after some noble sacrifice? Or was he perhaps a little too spoilery and asked to say something by Disney?

We won’t find out until April 26th, 2019 when Avenger’s 4 is finally released but hopefully we should be getting a trailer in the coming months. Before that, Captain Marvel is due to hit screens March 8th 2019.
