This week between Monday 28 January and Sunday 3 February, the UK’s music scene will be taken over by Independent Venue Week.
IVW is the UK’s leading celebration of its independent music venues. These venues give upcoming artists some of their earliest experiences of playing in front of a crowd and music fans the chance to discover artists in an intimate and unique setting.
TickX has decided to celebrate these venues by awarding six venues across the UK our new Independent Venue Award. Each day this Independent Venue Week, we’ll chat with staff from each of the venues we’ve selected to explore the venue itself, highlight the work it does in its local music scene and look at the events it has in store this week.
Our final Independent Venue Award this year goes to the Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen in Hackney, London. Now run by Mothership Group – the team behind other live venues such as Queen of Hoxton and Brighton’s Patterns - this spacious bar and music venue facing the verdant Hoxton Square is one of East London’s most vital live music venues.
While Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen offers a great selection of food and drinks, such as its New York-style buffalo chicken wings, the venue particularly stands out thanks to its live room. Fitting 300 people, the venue’s live room has played host to many acts early in their careers as well as the occasional star guest.
Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen is a bright, open-style bar with a heated and covered outdoor terrace. Boasting its own ‘green room’, which hosts all sorts from business figures meeting up for breakfast to informal al fresco dinner parties, it’s easy to see why this venue is popular for lunch or pre-gig drinks, especially in the summer months.
The venue’s live room is where the magic happens, though, as the bar’s central, fashionable location has helped make it a must-visit for bands just before they break through to the big time. The venue has hosted a formidable list of acts, with Florence & The Machine, Foals, Grimes, Mumford & Sons, Lianne La Havas, and Savages all having passed through over the past decade or so.
Under the management of the Mothership Group, Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen has kept its live legacy while seeking to diversify its programme. In recent years the venue has held a greater number of club nights cultural events such as film screenings and photography exhibitions.
